The network is gradually being phased out by the end of March 2026. The planned shutdown dates for each area can be seen here.
New Zealand is retiring its 3G mobile networks soon, and we’re here to help you stay connected.
Why is 3G shutting down?
3G networks are being phased out to make way for faster, more reliable 4G and 5G services. This includes the One NZ network that Contact mobile customers use. This upgrade means better coverage, speed, and performance for everyone.
What does this mean for you?
If you’re using a 3G-only phone, it’s likely that it will stop working after the shutdown. This means you won’t be able to make calls (including 111 calls), send texts or use mobile data after the network shutdown.
When is the 3G network shutting down?
The network will be gradually phased out across New Zealand by the end of March 2026. Below are the currently scheduled shutdown dates for each area, but dates are subject to change.
| Start date of 2G data and 3G network shutdown | Indicative area (not absolute to regional boundaries) |
|---|---|
| 20th January | Dunedin |
| 28th January | Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) sites. Located across the country in various areas. |
| 3rd February | Southland and Otago |
| 10th February | Canterbury, West Coast, Tasman & Marlborough (rest of South Island) excl Christchurch |
| 17th February | Northland |
| 24th February | Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki & Wanganui (Rest of North Island) excl Auckland and Wellington |
| 3rd March | Christchurch |
| 10th March | Auckland |
| 17th March | Wellington |
| 31st March - 2G calling network | NZ-wide |
What do you need to do?
To stay connected after the 3G network switches off, you will need a phone that’s able to use 4G calling (VoLTE). If your phone’s signal bar says 4G, 5G or VoLTE, then you should be all set. If it doesn’t then check out our list of common phones that support 4G.
What to do next
If your phone doesn’t appear in our list, then it's likely that you will need to get a replacement 4G or 5G capable phone ahead of the network switch off.
If your phone does appear in the list but you don’t think you are currently using 4G or 5G then you should check your phone settings to make sure that 4G/VoLTE is switched on.
