Broadband Breakdown – Finding the Perfect Connection for Your Home

Life is all about connections, right? From sharing memes with friends to binge-watching your favourite Netflix series, we all need to stay connected. But let’s be honest, for some of us choosing the right broadband can feel like navigating a world of tech jargon. Don’t worry—we’ve got your back. Whether you’re a casual scroller or a hardcore gamer, we can help you find the perfect broadband fit for your household.

Contact offers two broadband options—Fibre and Wireless, available only with an energy plan. So, what’s the deal with these two? Let’s dive in.

Fibre Broadband

Think of Fibre broadband as the VIP pass to the internet. It uses advanced fibre-optic cables to deliver internet straight to your home. In fact, did you know that in 2024, 70% of New Zealanders have embraced fibre? That’s because it’s perfect for households with medium to heavy internet usage, whether you’re working remotely, streaming back-to-back episodes of your favourite show, or juggling multiple devices at once.

Back in the day, you’d need to get fibre cables installed in your street by a local fibre company like Chorus, but nowadays, most streets have it all ready to go and the network is ever expanding

Going from less to more expensive, Contact’s fibre broadband plans include:

  • Fast Fibre – A reliable mid speed solution, perfect for small to large households with moderate internet usage.
  • Max Fibre – a high speed solution, designed for large homes with multiple devices, heavy internet users, or online gaming fanatics.

Both plans include unlimited data, so you can scroll, stream, and game to your heart’s content without worrying about hitting a cap and getting charged extra and getting slow internet. Modem and postage charges may apply.

Wireless Broadband

If you’re looking for a more flexible option, Wireless broadband might be your perfect match. It connects to the internet via the 4G mobile network, so there’s no need for installation or fibre cables. Just keep in mind, it’s not entirely cord-free, you’ll still need to plug it into a power socket. It’s a fantastic choice for areas where fibre isn’t available or for those who move frequently. Also great for the holiday home as you can simply take it with you on each visit.

Contact offers an unlimited wireless plan because who wants to worry about running out of data (fair use applies). All Wireless plans require a Contact supplied modem. Rent one for $4 per month or buy one for $99. A $14.99 postage fee applies.

Things to Consider Before You Choose Your Plan

Not sure which broadband option suits you best? Here are a few things to think about:

Internet Usage: How many people are in your household, and what do you use the internet for? If your activities include heavy streaming (such as watching high quality video or streaming for long periods), online gaming, or remote work, fibre is your best bet. For lighter tasks like checking emails and browsing, Wireless might do the trick.

Availability: Fibre isn’t available everywhere (yet). Use the Chorus network’s handy tool to check if Fibre is available at your address. In specific regions, you’ll also find providers like North Power Fibre (Whangarei), Tuatahi Fast Fibre, (Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Taranaki), and Enable Networks (Christchurch).

Flexibility: Need a connection that’s easy to move or set up without installation? Wireless broadband offers the convenience of plug-and-play—perfect for renters or those on the go.
