Electric Vehicles are becoming more accessible in New Zealand, with several options from new to used. The main three types are hybrids, plug in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs, but know as EVs). Check out our guide below so that you're more familiar with the different types of EVs available and what might be the best option for you.
Hybrids have an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. They're great for shorter distances.
A PHEV (Plug in hybrid vehicle) is a type of hybrid EV that needs plugging in to an electrical charging outlet.
A Battery Electric Vehicle or just EV, move using a large electricity battery and don't use any petrol or diesel fuels.
Now that you know a bit more about the types of EV's that are available, it's time to start seeing what's currently available in New Zealand.
Drive Electric and Gen Less are great resources sharing information on everything from battery expectations to what’s going on in the charging network. They also have tools to help choose what EV type is right for you.
Choosing the right energy plan for your home is just as important, so have a look at our Good Charge which recognises EV owners’ needs.
