Do you own an electric vehicle?

We use technology to find hours in the day when electricity is generally generated with renewable sources, and the demand is low to optimise your electric vehicle charging.

When we all use power during peak times, like in the morning and evening, New Zealand often has to rely on non-renewable sources like coal, gas, and diesel to meet the demand. 

If more power usage can be shifted to off-peak times, or less used during the peaks, we could reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy and move towards a more sustainable future.

• Be a Contact customer with a residential electricity supply at your main place of residence.
• It’s important you don't have anyone living at your address that is dependent on electricity to prevent loss of life or serious harm.
• Charge your EV with a smart charger or wall plug at your main place of residence. For EV owners that only charge away from home, sorry our EV Flex pilot is not available to you.
• Own a specific EV model as this technology is not yet available for every EV car type. To check your cars eligibility please complete the survey here.

For our pilot, we’ve selected a narrow range to concentrate on. Also, some vehicle manufacturers haven't enabled connectivity features in New Zealand, or the technology required isn’t available on older models.

No. Your current electricity rates remain the same. The purpose of EV Flex is to use technology to identify optimal times for charging your vehicle when electricity is generally being generated through renewable methods. 

Please note: Choosing a new plan during the pilot may change the rates or benefits you pay for existing services. 

We’ll do our best to make sure your vehicle is fully charged during your selected charging period. If you have preselected a charge limit in your vehicle brand app, this will not be overridden.

If you need to override your charging schedule for any reason, simply call us on 0800 222 730 and we’ll take care of this. Please note, we’re available 8.30am – 6pm weekdays to do this.

Outside of business hours, if you need to charge your car immediately we recommend using a public charging station.

Your electric vehicle will continue to charge at the current speed as per your normal charging, EV Flex will have no impact on this.  

Please note that charging speeds are influenced by factors such as hardware, temperature, and the type of EV charger being used.

Please call us on 0800 222 730 anytime between 8.30am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and we will opt you out within three business days.

Absolutely! You can score up to $150 in account credit just for taking part. For every month you’re part of the pilot, we’ll add a $50 credit (including GST) to your energy account – up to a total $150. This will be applied to your energy account on the first week of the month and will show as $43.48 (excluding GST). 

If you’re notified about a planned power outage at your property during your scheduled charging times, please let us know as soon as possible by calling us on 0800 222 730. This will allow us to ensure you can still charge your vehicle at home once the planned outage has finished.

If your car battery level is below 20%, or 50% for Mercedes, when you plug in to charge, your vehicle will automatically override our EV Flex schedule and charge you up to the minimum threshold for your EV. This safety feature ensures that you always have sufficient power to drive whenever necessary.

If you need to charge beyond the minimum threshold of 20% or 50%, we recommend relocating to a fast-charging station for optimal efficiency.
