Kaniere Forks Power Station is one of the country’s originals, built to power the region’s early gold-mining operations. The historic 1874 Kaniere Water Race supplies water to the stations. A walkway alongside the race is shared with the public and the Department of Conservation, forming part of the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail.
Lake Kaniere is popular for boating, fishing and swimming. We work in partnership with Fish & Game New Zealand to support trout populations in the lake and improve fish passage along the Kaniere River.
