The original Mangorei Power Station was built in 1904 and supplied power for street lighting and 41 customers in New Plymouth. A new station was built in 1931, including the highest earth dam in Australasia at the time, creating Lake Mangamahoe.
Lake Mangamahoe doubles as the drinking water reservoir for the New Plymouth District Council and is a well-used local recreational facility.
There is a fish pass at the intake weir on the Waiwhakaiho River and a trap and transfer programme for eels during the migration season.
