Motukawa makes use of the natural 99m elevation difference between the Manganui and Waitara Rivers to drive the station generators.

There is a fish pass at the intake weir on the Manganui River which allows migrating species to pass upstream and downstream of the weir. The fish pass is stepped to allow easy passage.  A trap and transfer programme for migrating adult tuna (native eels) operates during the migration season.

Lake Ratapiko provides a wonderful recreational facility for the local community and is home to the Taranaki branch of Jet Boating New Zealand and the New Plymouth Water Ski Club.

Manawa Energy has lodged an application with Taranaki Regional Council for resource consent to continue operations at Mangorei.
