Waihopai Power Station was commissioned in 1927 to supply electricity to the Marlborough region. Upgrades in the 1930s and 1960s more than doubled its output. Waihopai features a 33m concrete arch dam rising above the Waihopai Riverbed. Waihopai is run-of-river and fully embedded in the local network.
A trap-and-transfer programme is in place for elvers and adult tuna (native eels) at Waihopai.
