The main types of work-related injuries in FY25 for our people were hand injuries (cuts, fractures), cuts, strains, slips, foreign objects in eyes, minor burns.

For our monitored contractors, the main types of injuries were dog bites and strains.

Work related hazards that present a risk of high consequence injury: driving, electricity, hazardous substances, confined space work, excavations, geothermal gases, work at heights, lifting operations, working near or on water, stored energy.

Hazards are identified through observations raised, the Hazard ID pre-job process, risk assessment, pre-job planning, hazards are raised in our H&S system.

Note: Monitored contractors (meter readers & technicians) are excluded from these statistics.

Work related hazards that pose a risk to health: Hazardous substances, geothermal substances and gases, asbestos, manual lifting, biological hazards, psychosocial factors.
Hazards are identified through observations raised, the Hazard ID pre-job process, risk assessment, pre-job planning, hazards are raised in our H&S system.

Regular reviews by internal and external stakeholders including WorkSafe NZ, and our ongoing sharing seminars allow us to minimise the above listed risks, and other risks, through engagement and knowledge sharing.

Data is compiled through our H&S reporting system, including injuries and ill health. A report is generated with includes classifications and injury summary. The categorisation of these help us to determine if it is a work-related injury or illness, and the agency of the injury.

TISR or Total Incident Severity Rate is a lead indicator designed to help us quantify how well our defences are working to prevent serious incidents in the future. It uses a weighting system to ensure the more serious incidents are reflected within the calculation.

The calculation method is based on the following three parameters:

i.    Actual Injuries - dependent on the actual severity of the reported injury
ii.    Process Safety – dependent on the tier of the validated process safety incident
iii.    All HSE Incidents – dependent on the potential consequence of the reported incident

An incident is counted in multiple fields (Actual Injury, Process Safety & All HSE Incidents) if applicable as this ensures it can cover all aspects of the incident (i.e. if it is an injury that also had environmental & process safety aspects, it will be recorded within each field with the applicable weighting).

TISR is calculated by multiplying each injury or Health & Safety incident by its weighted severity level. The sum of all weighted incidents is divided by controlled hours worked, then multiplied by 1,000,000 to normalise the final TISR result as a Moving Annual Total (MAT)

Process safety tiers:

Tier 1 - a significant loss of containment of hazardous material or energy.
Tier 2 - a lesser loss of primary containment or a significant degradation of barriers.
Tier 3 - learning event where issues have been identified in our process safety barriers or controls.

Reportable privacy incidents

FY25FY24FY23FY22FY21
Number of complaints received from outside parties & substantiated16343001
Number of complaints received from regulatory bodies00000
Total number of identified leaks, thefts, or losses of customer data7057597628

We started recording the number of privacy breaches from 1 December 2020. Most of the privacy breaches were considered minor in nature (for example, affected one or two customers causing little or no harm). In FY23, we introduced better recording for the source of complaints (i.e from customers (outside parties) vs staff).
