Here’s some tips to help you get sorted first.

Step 1.  Find out the best plan for you

Enter your home address, choose your services and plan.

Top tip: Choosing a Good Plan means free or discounted power at certain times of the day. Think about what you could do at your place to shift your power usage to these times. That will help you decide if its right for you. These plans are also known as Time of Use plans.

Or choose our Basic Plan for simplicity.

Step 2. Choose between low user and standard rates

When you join an electricity company you have another choice to make. Whether to choose low user or standard user rates. This depends on how much energy you think you’ll use over a year.

Choosing low user means:

  • a lower daily charge
  • higher price per unit compared to standard electricity plans

If you use less than 8,000 kWh of electricity at your main home, you will generally be better off choosing low user. This increases to 9,000 kWh in some parts of the lower South Island.

Top tip: Check your usage on your current power company’s app to see how much you generally use each year.

You can switch between the two rate types later if you need to.

Why Low User plans are being phased out by April 2027.

Step 3. Need to compare our plans with other power companies?

No problem. Powerswitch is an independent energy plan comparison website that can help with this.

Some common questions answered:

Q: Do I have tell my old power company if I'm changing to Contact?

A: No, we will take care of all that for you. Nice and easy!

Q: What happens to the power account when I move house?

A: Simply let us know the new date you'll be moving in and we'll start your account from that day. The people leaving will get a final bill from their provider.

Q: What if I move into a new place and the power has been disconnected?

A: Please sign up online as usual. If you find your new place has no power supply when you get there, you’ll need to call us on 0800 494 847. We can get you connected at most times of the day, usually within an hour with some exceptions.

Q: What if I'm not moving but just switching from another provider and that account is in a different name?

A: No problem. It doesn't matter if an account is in a different name with another provider. When you join us, your Contact account will be in your name. There's also no need to advise the existing provider, we'll take care of it all when you join.
