What does ‘Endless Data’ really mean?

No one ever wants to get that dreaded text: Heads up! You’ve now used 100% of your data.

Mobile data reigns supreme in today’s world. Whether you’re scrolling socials, video calling friends, or replying to emails on the go, reliable data is the most important part of a mobile plan (remember, data is what kicks in when you’re not hooked onto a Wi-Fi connection).

That’s why we made our mobile plans with endless data to support your daily data demands. No need to worry about running out – you’ll have data wherever you go (note: data speeds and coverage will depend on location).

You might be thinking: what’s the catch? Endless data is surely too good to be true.

To save yourself the hassle of searching the corners of the internet, let’s walk through what ‘endless data’ truly means, tips and tricks to help maximize your ‘endless data’ and other useful info so you can scroll and stream without stress.

What is ‘endless data’?

You might be on a mobile plan with ‘endless data’, but what does ‘endless’ actually mean? Here’s the download:

Max Speed Data: This is the data that you can use at the maximum speed available on the network. Dream big: no buffering on videos, instant Google searches, clear-as-day video calls.

Each mobile plan gives you a certain amount of this max speed data each month, e.g. our small plan comes with 5GB of maximum speed data per month.

Endless Data: Hit your max limit already? No sweat.

Once you hit your plan’s max speed data limit, you still have data to use - it will just drop to a reduced speed of 1.2Mbps (megabits per second – that’s the measure of internet speed). Think of it like drinking too much coffee – at some point, you’ll hit a wall and slow down. Use your data wisely so you can get the most out of it.

So how can I make the most out of my max data?

In short, it depends on the type of mobile plan you’re on.

  • Small (5GB max speed data): Think ‘light’. Surfing the web, scrolling through Instagram and sending your mum another picture of your cat are all low-data activities you can do on this plan without running out of your max speed data too quickly.
  • Medium (20GB max speed data): Hello streaming! Tune into Spotify, watch YouTube during your lunch break, or post to your Instagram story (again). But everything in moderation…we wouldn’t want to run out by re-downloading Candy Crush for the third time this week.
  • Large (75GB max speed data): Honestly, live your best data life. Stream, download, game, video call, repeat. You might need to leave YouTube running nonstop for the whole month to get through this much data!
  • Group Plans: everyone gets their own data allowance on group plans – no need to share, unless your mate needs a hotspot. For example, if you’re in a group and everyone is on a medium plan, you each have 20GB of data to use however you’d like.

More tips and tricks for saving data:

  1. Do your data-hungry stuff first: want to download that Netflix movie? Do it while your data is still running at top gear. Save your ‘light’ tasks such as emails or reading this article for when your data has slowed down.
  2. Keep an eye on your data usage: No one likes getting to the plot twist of their favorite TV show and it suddenly starts buffering. Avoid this by keeping track of how much max speed data you have left in your mobile app.
  3. Wi-Fi is still your best friend! Save your precious max speed data and hop on Wi-Fi networks when and where you can.

What happens when your max data runs out?

It might feel like the end of the world when you hit your max speed limit. The good news? You can still use data, but it will now run at a reduced speed of 1.2 Mbps. This means you’re down to the basics like scrolling, web searching, and checking emails. Things like watching video content on social media and downloading apps or images might not work or take longer on reduced data speeds.

Once your mobile plan renews, you’ll get a new load of maximum speed data.

When will my max data be renewed?

If you’ve run out of maximum speed data before the month is up, don’t freak out – you'll get a fresh batch of high-speed data at the start of your next billing cycle. Just remember, your data doesn’t renew on the day your payment is made – instead, it renews at the start of your billing cycle (when your invoice comes through your inbox). Keep an eye out in your inbox for this renewal date!

What should I do if my max data keeps running out?

If you keep hitting your data limit way before the end of the month, not to worry. Here are a few things that could help:

Review your daily usage in the Contact mobile app: check in with how much data you’re using and identify what exactly is burning through your data – maybe scrolling is taking up more data than you think! Figuring out your data habits means you can adjust your data consumption and stretch your data further.

Grab a data add-on: If you desperately need a data boost, no problem! You can grab some data ‘add-ons’ in the app to help you through until your max speed data renews.

Upgrade upgrade upgrade: if you’re always running out of your max speed data, it might be time to upgrade to a plan with more high-speed data. Take that pressure off - you’ve earned it!

Does my max speed data on an Endless Plan roll over?

Unless it’s stated in your plan's entitlements, then sadly, no*. At the end of each month the slate is wiped clean, and you get a whole new batch of speedy data to enjoy.

Can I hotspot my mobile data?

Yes! Hotspotting is free and perfect for times when you need to share your connection with your laptop, tablet, or that friend who is still out of data (did they have any in the first place?).

Keep in mind: hotspotting uses your max speed mobile data, so you might run out quicker the more you hotspot. Think of it like sharing your food – the more you share with others, the less you get to eat yourself.

Why is my data slower?

If you’re noticing slower speeds than usual, there might be a few reasons for this:

  1. Network congestion: Think of it like peak hour traffic, but for your mobile data. Too many people using the network at the same time can slow things down.
  2. Max speed limit reached: if you have used all your fast data, your data will slow down. Check in with your app to see where you’re at with your data usage.
  3. Network coverage issues: you might have slightly different data speeds depending on where you are in the country*. Check out this coverage map to check your signal strength where you’re located.

And that’s the lowdown on endless data. Use these tips to scroll, search and stream to your heart (and data limit’s) content!
